Week 1 – Introduction to Sustainable Development

Week 1 – Introduction to Sustainable Development

Systems Thinking: A New Lens

We were introduced to systems thinking, a powerful approach that helps us understand the deeper connections between social, economic, and environmental issues. It encourages looking at the “whole picture” rather than isolated parts, which is essential when dealing with global challenges like climate change or inequality.

What is Sustainable Development?

The most widely accepted definition comes from the Brundtland Report (1987):

“Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

This is more than just an environmental concern. It’s about finding a balanced relationship between economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection.

Three Core Concepts of Sustainability

  1. Living within Earth's Limits – respecting the planet’s capacity to support life.

  2. Understanding Interconnections – recognizing how economy, society, and environment influence each other.

  3. Fair Distribution – ensuring justice and equity across generations.

The 5Ps of Sustainable Development

The framework of sustainable development rests on five key principles:

  • People – ending poverty and hunger in all forms.

  • Planet – protecting the environment for current and future generations.

  • Prosperity – ensuring all people enjoy prosperous lives.

  • Peace – fostering peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.

  • Partnership – strengthening global solidarity for sustainable goals.
