 Week 2 – Islam & Sustainable Development

1. Environmental Sustainability in Islam

Islam teaches that the Earth belongs to everyone and must be cared for. We are not owners, but caretakers (khalifah) of nature. Some key points we learned:

• Don’t harm or pollute the Earth. Even wasting water is discouraged, even if you're next to a flowing river!

• The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that we shouldn’t pollute water or waste natural resources.

• Planting trees and protecting animals are acts of charity in Islam.

2. Social Sustainability

Islam promotes fairness, justice, and strong communities. Concepts like shura (consultation), amanah (trust), and rahmah (compassion) encourage us to work together and care for others.

Practicing the pillars of Islam (prayer, fasting, zakat, etc.) also strengthens community bonds and supports those in need.

3. Economic Sustainability

Islam supports economic growth that is fair and kind. Some examples:

• Giving zakat (charity) and waqaf (endowments) helps reduce poverty.

• Islam bans riba (interest) to prevent unfair financial systems.

• Encourages saving and not being greedy.
