Week 6 – The Role of Universities in Building a Sustainable Future

Why Universities Matter in Sustainability

Universities are more than just places for academic study. They have a big responsibility to prepare students not only for jobs, but also for life. This includes teaching us about:

  • Environmental responsibility

  • Social justice

  • Moral values

  • Critical thinking

A sustainable university must teach students how to live wisely and act responsibly.

Islamic Perspective on Education

We learned about the ideas of Professor Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, who emphasized that Islamic education should shape both our character and intellect. He says real education must:

  • Combine spiritual, intellectual, and ethical knowledge.

  • Help students become khalifah (stewards of the Earth).

  • Connect Islamic values with modern science to solve today’s challenges.

Going Beyond Grades

Education should not just be about chasing grades or jobs. It should help students:

  • Understand the world’s sustainability issues.

  • Develop empathy and a sense of social responsibility.

  • Become global citizens who can lead change.
