Week 7 – Challenges to Sustainable Development

Sustainable development imagines a world in which environmental preservation, social equity, and economic advancement harmoniously coexist. However, in reality, achieving this balance is quite difficult. This week’s lesson highlighted the major obstacles that pose a worldwide challenge for sustainable development.

A major hurdle is disparity. For numerous people, access to vital necessities like clean water, education, food, and healthcare continues to be an unattained aspiration. Over 1.3 billion people suffer from extreme poverty, whereas 805 million face hunger daily. This issue is worsened by unfair global structures, where, for example, a cow in Europe could receive more in subsidies than what an individual in Africa earns in one day. These disparities are not only unjust but also unsustainable.

The economic framework itself poses another challenge. Unchecked expansion, overconsumption, and a focus on short-term gains have led to ecological harm and rising rates of poverty. The ecosystem is being harmed by deforestation, pollution, and a decline in biodiversity, threatening the welfare of upcoming generations. Moreover, issues in governance such as corruption, lack of transparency, and ineffective leadership obstruct the execution of viable solutions.

  1. It is heartbreaking to see that a cow in Europe is being subsidised the same amount as an African despite the implementation of SDGs worldwide.
